How to connect Square to a WooCommerce store
Use WooCommerce Square, the official extension built by WooCommerce. It's free, it takes Square payments on your website, and it syncs product names, prices, descriptions, images, categories and stock between WooCommerce and Square, with one of them set as the system of record.
We've built websites and stores since 2008, and we've connected Square to WooCommerce for clients. This page covers the one setting that decides how the sync behaves, what moves in each direction, and what to check before you turn it on.
Does Square integrate with WooCommerce?
Yes. WooCommerce Square is published by WooCommerce and Automattic, has 80,000+ active installs, and is listed as free on WooCommerce.com. It takes cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Cash App Pay, and WooCommerce lists it for the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, Ireland, France, Spain and the UK. It needs a Square account and an SSL certificate on your site (woocommerce.com/products/square, wordpress.org/plugins/woocommerce-square, as of October 2026).
Square also offers its own free online store builder (squareup.com/us/en/online-store). If you already run a WooCommerce store you want to keep, the extension connects Square to it, so you aren't running two online stores against the same stock.
How do you choose the system of record?
This is the setting that matters most. WooCommerce Square makes you pick one side as the system of record (Sync Settings):
- Square. Product updates in Square pull into WooCommerce. WooCommerce recommends this when your catalog is managed mainly in Square, such as through a Square register. Edits made to synced products in WooCommerce are overwritten by Square's data on the next sync.
- WooCommerce. Product updates in WooCommerce push to Square. This fits a store that sells mainly online. Changes made in Square are overwritten by WooCommerce on the next sync.
Pick the side where your team already edits products, and make it the only place anyone edits them.
What syncs from Square to WooCommerce?
With Square as the system of record, product name, price, description and stock sync to WooCommerce (Square to WooCommerce). A few details from the docs:
- Square's base price becomes the WooCommerce regular price. Square has no separate sale price.
- Only Square's primary category is imported.
- Variation titles and images don't sync.
- "Sync Now" updates products already linked. New Square items come in through "Import all Products from Square."
- Products are matched by SKU, and each product needs a unique SKU in Square to import.
How do in-store Square sales update the website?
WooCommerce checks Square on a schedule, so in-person sales on the Square register lower your online stock. Stock is right as of the last check, not the instant of the sale, and the FAQ says inventory is pulled from Square every hour to account for register sales (FAQ). You can change the interval.
Orders have their own setting. Order fulfillment sync is off by default. Turned on, it sends new WooCommerce orders to Square with pickup or shipping details, checks Square every 15 minutes by default, and brings back "Completed" and "Canceled" statuses. Refunds created in Square don't sync back to WooCommerce (Sync Orders).
What should you check before you turn it on?
- Unique SKUs on both sides. The sync matches on SKU, so every product you sell in both places needs the same SKU in Square and WooCommerce.
- One place to edit. Whichever side isn't the system of record gets overwritten, so tell your team where product edits happen.
- Descriptions under 4,095 characters if WooCommerce is the system of record. Square's limit causes a sync error for longer ones.
- Sale prices. With Square in charge there's no sale price field, so plan how you'll run online sales.
- The sync records. A sync that skips a product can still show 100%, so read the records and check the skipped SKUs.
- A real test order. Place one online, sell one at the register, and check that both counts moved.

Questions
- Is the WooCommerce Square extension free?
- Yes. WooCommerce Square is listed as free on WooCommerce.com and is on WordPress.org as of October 2026. You need a Square account to connect it.
- Does WooCommerce Square sync inventory both ways?
- It syncs from whichever side you set as the system of record. Square register sales lower WooCommerce stock at each scheduled check, and the FAQ says inventory is pulled from Square every hour.
- Do WooCommerce orders show up in Square?
- Yes, if you turn on order fulfillment sync, which is off by default. New WooCommerce orders go to Square with pickup or shipping details, and completed or canceled statuses come back.
- Why are some of my Square products missing from WooCommerce?
- Square products need a unique SKU to import, and "Sync Now" only updates products already linked. Use "Import all Products from Square" for new items and check the sync records for skipped SKUs.
- Should I use Square's online store or WooCommerce?
- If you already have a WooCommerce store you want to keep, connect Square to it with the extension. Running both means two online stores selling the same stock.
