Ecommerce SEO for Shopify and WooCommerce stores
Ecommerce SEO is the work of giving every product, collection and image in your store the words that search engines and shoppers read, written from what you actually sell. We do it on Shopify and WooCommerce stores, and the work is the same on both: a title and meta description for every product and category, alt text on every image, real category descriptions, and FAQs built from the questions your customers ask.
We've built websites and online stores since 2008. This page covers what changes between the two platforms, what happens to search when you move from one to the other, and where to start.
What's the same on Shopify and WooCommerce?
- Every product and category needs its own title and meta description. Shopify themes, for example, add your store name to every title on their own.
- Every product image needs alt text, written after looking at the photo.
- Category and collection pages need words. An empty category page gives search engines nothing but product names.
- Product pages need enough to answer a shopper's questions, such as materials, sizes, how it's used and how it ships, taken from your own product text.
- New copy goes to the owner for approval before it goes live, and every fact traces back to the owner's own words.
What's different on Shopify and WooCommerce?
On Shopify, the search fields are built into the admin. Every product, collection and page has a search engine listing section, and Shopify generates your sitemap, robots.txt and canonical tags (Shopify SEO overview). The common problems sit in the theme, such as a store name printed twice in every title, extra H1 headings, or demo text left live. The steps are on the Shopify SEO checklist, and the service is Shopify SEO for small product brands.
On WooCommerce, the titles, meta descriptions and sitemaps come from an SEO plugin. On the WooCommerce stores we run, that's Rank Math, with one SEO plugin per site, never two. WooCommerce runs on WordPress, so the theme, the hosting and the plugins are yours to choose, and the SEO work includes checking that the plugin's sitemaps list every product you sell.
What happens to SEO when you move from Shopify to WooCommerce?
Every old product address needs to point to its new page, or the pages that search engines already know about stop working. When we moved a downtown Ventura gift and coffee shop's store from Shopify to WooCommerce, we imported 563 redirect rules: renamed products, collections, categories, policies and blog pages. We checked that every pattern landed on a working page within two redirects. The store went live on WooCommerce on August 13, 2026, and its website stock now updates from the register every morning (case study).
If you're on Shopify and might move later, plan the redirect map from the first week and keep your copy in a form that moves with you.
Which stores have we done this for?
- Rock Solid Instruments, a WooCommerce store. We carried the brand's strategy, voice and visual direction into the website, product pages and checkout, and we run its SEO with Google Analytics and Search Console connected.
- A downtown Ventura gift and coffee shop, on WooCommerce, with a monthly Local Search and Social retainer that started August 19, 2026.
- LA Sōl Collective, a Shopify storefront, shipping program, Amazon connection and launch marketing (our work).
- A plant-based body care brand on Shopify, where we wrote titles and meta descriptions for every product and collection and alt text for all 106 product images in October 2026.
If your store also needs its stock connected to a register, see POS website integration. Starting a new site from nothing? See how to build a website with AI.
