Shopify SEO for small product brands

Published October 22, 2026

Shopify SEO for a small product brand means giving every product, collection, page and image the words that search engines and shoppers read, written from what the brand actually sells. We do that work inside your Shopify store: titles and meta descriptions on every product and collection, alt text on every image, collection descriptions, product FAQs, and the theme fixes that undercut all of it, and you approve every piece of new copy before it goes live.

We've built websites and online stores since 2008, on Shopify and WooCommerce. This page lays out how a Shopify SEO engagement runs, step by step, using the pattern from our October 2026 work on a plant-based body care brand's Shopify store. If you want to do it yourself first, the Shopify SEO checklist has the same steps written for an owner.

What does Shopify SEO work include?

  1. We read the store as it is. Before we write a word, we audit every product, collection, page and image. On the body care store, that audit covered all 106 product images, every public collection, each page's heading structure, the page titles and the theme's built-in sections.
  2. You give us the right access, and only that. You add us as staff, and we install a private app that holds only the permissions the work needs. Permissions are added only when a later phase of the work needs them. Nothing is sent by email or pasted into chat.
  3. We back up before anything changes. We save a snapshot of every field we're about to touch, plus the theme file and a full product export, so any change can be put back.
  4. We map the searches to the pages. We group the searches your customers make by topic and match each group to the page that should answer it. This is where structural gaps show up. A common example is a line where every scent is a variant of one product, so no single scent has its own page to rank.
  5. We write a title and meta description for every product and collection. Shopify accepts titles up to 70 characters and suggests about 60, and recommends meta descriptions under 160 characters (Shopify Help Center). Each one is written from your own product text.
  6. We write alt text for every product image, after looking at the photo. Shopify allows 512 characters and recommends 125 or fewer (Shopify Help Center). On the body care store, all 106 product images now carry written alt text.
  7. We fix the theme. Shopify themes generate title tags that include your store name (Shopify SEO overview), and some theme settings add it twice. We set the title suffix in the theme layout file, set the homepage title and description in Online Store > Preferences, and cleared leftover theme demo sections.
  8. We draft collection descriptions and product FAQs for your approval. Both come from your own product descriptions and the questions your customers ask. They go to you as a document, and nothing goes live until you say yes.
  9. We check every line against your own words. Before and after we push, an independent check compares every claim in the new copy to your product text, and every alt text to the photo it describes. Anything that doesn't trace back to you gets rewritten or cut, and then we read the live store back to confirm what shoppers see.

Who is Shopify SEO for?

It's for small product brands on Shopify with a real catalog, where the owner writes the product pages and wants the search fields to carry the same care. The work is making sure search engines can read what the owner already knows about every product.

It's also for brands thinking about a move to WooCommerce later. We keep the copy portable and plan the redirect map from the first week, so the work carries over. When we moved a downtown Ventura gift and coffee shop's store from Shopify to WooCommerce, we mapped 563 old Shopify addresses to their new pages and checked that every pattern landed within two redirects. That store's story is in the case study.

What does the owner approve?

  • New copy. Collection descriptions, rewritten product descriptions and product FAQs go to you first.
  • Facts only you know. Ingredients, sizes, shipping times, how something is made. If a fact isn't in your own text, we ask you, and the sentence waits for your answer.
  • Changes shoppers will see. When a theme setting changes how a product page looks, such as how variant options display, we tell you what changed and how to switch it back.

Titles, meta descriptions and alt text are written from your own product text, and every one is checked against it before it goes live.

When will you see results from Shopify SEO?

Search engines take weeks to re-read a store, so the first honest numbers come 60 to 90 days after the work goes live. Before the first change, we record a baseline in Google Search Console, and each monthly report compares against it. We report what Search Console shows, and we don't promise rankings.

Do I have to leave Shopify?

No. We work inside your store through the Shopify admin and a private app you approve, and your theme, apps and checkout stay as they are. If you sell in person, keep your register too. If you ever want your shop's stock and your register connected, see POS website integration.

For how this fits with WooCommerce stores, see ecommerce SEO.

Questions

What does a Shopify SEO service include?
Titles and meta descriptions on every product and collection, alt text on every product image, collection descriptions, product FAQs, and fixes to theme settings that hurt search, such as a store name repeated in every title. New copy goes to you for approval first.
Do you need my Shopify password?
No. You add us as staff and approve a private app that holds only the permissions the work needs. Nothing is sent by email.
Will you change my product descriptions?
Only with your approval. Rewritten descriptions and FAQs go to you as a document first, and every fact in them comes from your own product text or your answers.
How long until Shopify SEO shows results?
Plan on 60 to 90 days before the first honest numbers. We record a Search Console baseline before the first change and report against it each month.
Can you write alt text for all my product images?
Yes. We write it for every product image after looking at each photo, and keep it within Shopify's recommended 125 characters.
